Serbian head coach Veselin Matic and the Lebanon basketball federation have finalized a six month contract that will see coach Matic leading the Lebanon national team into this summer’s 2015 FIBA Asia Championships in Changsha, China.
Matic is very familiar with the Asian basketball scene having coached the Iranian basketball team from 2009 to 2012 winning the 2009 FIBA Asia Championships. The Lebanon basketball team is coming an eight month ban from FIBA that ended in May of last year.
As they make their push to qualify the Olympics, coach Matic will have a couple of solid players on his roster. Fadi El Khatib, 36, is a solid veteran that brings leadership to the young Lebanese team. This year, El Khatib averaged 25 points and seven rebounds for the Foshan Long Lions of the Chinese Basketball Association. Lebanon will also wlecome the presence of former Univeristy of Rice swingman Ahmad Ibrahim. The 23-year-old who left college to pursue a pro career in Lebanon provides energy and scoring.
The Lebanese basketball team will start their international quest in May, 2015 when they participate in the FIBA West Asia qualifying tournament.
