Thrilla in Manila hits the hardwood; FIBA Asia Championships

The 27th FIBA Asia Championships tip off tomorrow in Manila, Philippines with “group C” action as Malasia and their heavy hearts face a strong Iran team that finished second at the 2011 FIBA Asia championships.

Fifteen teams were divided into four groups through a draft lottery system. The tournament will start on August 1st leading to the tournament finals which take place on August 11th.

China remains the heavy favourites to repeat as champions. They are a part of a super group that includes 2009 champions Iran as well as a hungry Korean team questing for gold.

Group B was knocked down to three teams when the Lebanon national team faced a four year suspension from FIBA officials.

The host team, Gilas pilipinas (Philippine), are more than excited to host the tournament. The country has been improving their talent each year and they finally believe they have what it takes to see the podium winning a ticket to FIBA world championships in Spain.
